Kelowna Fire Dispatch received numerous 911 calls this afternoon around 1:48 p.m. The calls reported a house fire in the 1500 block of McKenzie Road.
The first arriving unit reported heavy smoke and flame coming from the rear of the structure.
Crews knocked down fire from the exterior before entering the house. After conducting a primary search, they found four dogs, one cat and a duck that sadly did not survive the fire.
No occupants were found upon the initial search. After the secondary search was completed it was confirmed no occupants were inside as they were not home at the time of the fire.
Fire crews were able to extinguish the fire quickly. Fire damage was contained to the rear of the structure's main floor and deck, while heavy smoke damage affected the rest of the structure.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, and Kelowna Fire Investigators will be at the scene investigating.
Emergency Support Services were notified that the one adult and two children of the home would be unable to stay in the residence and would need support.
The Fire Department would like to remind the public to check your smoke detectors regularly as working smoke detectors save lives.
