UPDATE: Large police presence was due to 'distraught' man with gun

(UPDATE: May 19 @ 10:55 am): A large police presence in Kelowna on Saturday was in response to a “distraught” man with a gun, the RCMP has said. 

Police, backed up by specially trained officers, surrounded an area in the 3800 block of Senger Road.

They had been called about the armed man at about 1:45 pm. 

“After several hours, the man was located near Springfield Road and Hollywood Road in Kelowna,” said Cpl Jocelyn Noseworthy. 

“Frontline officers chose to err on the side of caution and call for the support of the specially trained officers to assist with the potentially high risk incident.” 

She added: “The matter was resolved without issues, and we would like to thank the public for their cooperation.” 

The incident is still under investigation, police said.  

No charges have yet been laid. 

(Original story: May 16 @ 5:50 pm): Several police vehicles have assembled near the Springfield Road and Hollywood Road intersection, cutting off westbound traffic. 

A witness reports that there are about five police vehicles near the intersection, with what appears to be "armoured cars [and] an army type vehicle" also involved.

Police did not immediately respond to NowMedia requests for comment.
