City council will take the unusual step of holding a meeting at 4 pm on Wednesday, July 17 to further discuss the contentious Rutland supportive housing project.

The announcement was made by Mayor Colin Basran during council’s weekly Monday meeting.

“I have been in discussions with BC Housing Minister Selina Robinson regarding the operating model of the housing development,” said Basran.

“To allow for more time, I have asked for a council meeting to take place this Wednesday.”

According to Basran, the meeting is still within the reconsideration period allocated under the municipal act that allows for council to reconsider its June 17 decision to approve the project’s development permit.

“This is not a delay tactic, but an honest effort of finding a compromise,” commented councillor Mohini Singh.

Opposition to the 49-unit supportive housing complex grew quickly following the decision largely due to the facility permitting drug and alcohol consumption onsite.

Residents have cited the multiple public schools and recreational amenities located in the area as the main point of opposition against the project.

A petition started to stop the McCurdy Road development has gathered over 14,000 signatures in two weeks.
