With a huge increase in people reaching out for help amid the COVID-19 disaster, the Salvation Army in Kelowna is asking for help this Christmas.

The Christian charity said it has seen a 61% surge in those needing aid, with 41% of those enquiring for the first time.

It expects demand to intensify as Christmas approaches.

Darryl Burry, executive director in Kelowna, said there is “a lot of uncertainty” in the city.

“There have been many who have lost their jobs or are facing uncertainty with their employment. This is in addition to those who were already struggling with food and housing security.

He added: “Each day seems to bring about a new challenge, and so we desire to come alongside and share some hope with those who are experiencing this weight.”

Last year the charity’s Christmas program, which gives those in need a gift card for food and toys for kids, helped 526 families – including more than a thousand children – enjoy the season.

“We could not provide this blessing without the tremendous support of the community,” said Burry.

“From financial donations to the donation of food products and new toys… each contribution helps us to provide hope and dignity to local families.”
