The British Columbia Choral Federation (BCCF) Chorfest is coming to Kelowna this week.

So far, nearly 65 singers representing over 17 choirs from around the BC Interior have registered to attend the two-day event, where they will sing together with a world-class conductor.

“After several difficult years for choral singing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I am so pleased that Chorfest is being relaunched this year in this way,” said Willi Zwozdesky, the executive director of BCCF.

“We are finally getting back to group singing and sharing our voices with each other and with concert audiences.”

Past BCCF Chorfest events have taken place in one location with singers from throughout the province, but there will be three regional events taking place simultaneously this year, in Kelowna, Courtenay and Gibsons.

“The BC Choral Federation is so excited to be presenting Chorfest events in so many parts of British Columbia this month and I’m especially excited to be helping to bring this event to the Okanagan,” said Frances Chiasson, the vice president of BCCH and chair of the Okanagan Chorfest organizing committee.

“We can’t wait for the singing to begin.”

On May 27 at 7 pm, the Okanagan Chorfest in Kelowna will culminate in a Cascade of Choirs concert, where several local choirs will perform at the Central Okanagan United Church.

This musical extravaganza will feature performances by the Okanagan Chorfest choir, Musaic Vocal Ensemble from Summerland, Aura Chamber Choir from Vernon, Vallee Harmony from Salmon Arm, and Okanagan Children’s Choir from Kelowna.

The concert will be led by conductor Hussein Janmohamed, who has performed with award-winning Canadian choirs.

Choral music enthusiast John Powell will also be posthumously honoured at the event for his work promoting choirs in the Okanagan.

To participate as a singer, registration can be done here

Tickets for the concert can be reserved via email at fchiasson@choral-music.com. It is $20 per adult and $5 per student or child.
