A 22-storey tower proposed for the corner of Harvey Avenue and Pandosy Street would be the first in Kelowna with “lock-off” units.
The “Aura” development has a proposed 102-units, 42 of which would be designed as lock-off units that would allow the owner to rent out one bedroom as a short-term rental with minimal interference.
Theoretically, the one bedroom would be part of the two bedroom apartment, but would have its own access to the common corridor, bathroom and be easily locked off from the rest of the apartment.
While the locked off portion would allow the user to come and go as they please and provide a bed, it would only function as a short-term rental and would have no kitchen.
According to Adam Cseke with the City of Kelowna, lock off units are gaining popularity in Metro Vancouver as a method of offsetting mortgage costs, similar to single-family dwellings having secondary suites.
However, with the City of Kelowna still considering proposed short-term rental regulations, whether or not the concept of lock off units actually comes to fruition remains to be seen.
The tower would be built on the same site as the Dragon King restaurant, whose owner is also part of the development team behind the project.
