Another temporary winter shelter in Kelowna is set to open to the city’s homeless population.
A handful of people have already begun taking refuge in the old Daily Courier building, which officially opens as a new co-ed winter shelter tomorrow.
The Gospel Mission, which will operate the shelter, spent the last month on renovations and preparations.
The large building now features sleeping pods that are sectioned off with a bed, nightstand and a barrier to follow COVID-19 guidelines for social distancing.
Residents will also have access to on-site showers, laundry and three meals a day.
“It is essential that people have a warm place to go during the cold weather,” explained Carmen Rempel, executive director at Kelowna’s Gospel Mission.
“We are thrilled at the way organizations came together so no one must sleep outside this winter.”
This will be the second temporary winter shelter to open in Kelowna for the cold-weather months, as The Welcome Inn on Ellis Street started taking in residents in early November.
Both shelters will be open until March 31, 2021.
