The Parkinson’s SuperWalk took place in Kelowna this morning, giving around 200 people the opportunity to raise awareness and support those living with the disease.
This was the ninth year the event has come to Kelowna, and Jean Blake, chief executive officer at the Parkinson Society of BC says that it’s grown every year. According to Blake, Kelowna’s event is the second largest for fundraising behind Vancouver.
She expects that this year they will break half a million dollars in funds raised over the course of the nine years that Kelowna has been participating. Blake adds that it’s all because of the great support group in Kelowna and their excellent team of volunteers.
The fundraiser supports people with Parkinson’s disease and their caregivers. It is a celebration of living well with Parkinson’s disease, encouraging individuals with the disease, as well as their families and friends to share their victory over adversity and their ability to lead productive lives.
Parkinson Society BC is supported entirely by donations from individuals, members, corporations, foundations and the dedicated efforts of volunteers.
Bob, an organizer of the event and a 13-year member of the support group for Parkinson’s disease says that “The big thing is that it's a great opportunity for Kelownians to expand their thinking."
“Parkinson's is a disease that people just keeping learning more and more about,” he says. “I have to say that Parkinson's is not the end of the world. There’s life after Parkinson's. As someone adequately put, 'I might have Parkinson's, but I won’t let it have me.'"
