A toddler is in hospital with serious injuries after falling off of a third floor balcony in Kelowna.

Police responded to the 100-block of Gerstmar road at 7 a.m. on Tuesday morning after receiving a report of a toddler that had tumbled from the balcony of a third floor apartment.

The neighbour was awakened by her barking dogs and heard the child, a 2-year-old boy, screaming as she went outside to investigate, police say.

The toddler sustained serious injuries from the fall and was rushed to hospital by BC EHS for medical assessment and treatment.

Police were told that, according to medical professionals, it would be necessary for the child to be air lifted to Vancouver for "advanced care."

RCMP are continuing their investigation and, as per protocol, have notified the Ministry of Child and Family Development of the incident who are now conducting their own investigation into the incident.
