Tolko Industries has received an extension for its required environmental assessment of a former Kelowna mill.

On Friday, the company confirmed it had received more time from the Ministry of Environment nearly a year after initially requesting the deadline be pushed back.

An independent firm has been hired to conduct a site investigation of the property located in the north end of downtown Kelowna.

“The third-party team conducting the site study have used provincial protocols to confirm that the site is not high risk to the environment or human health,” said Bob Fleet, Tolko’s Vice President of Environment and Forestry.

“While detailed analysis is ongoing, we are pleased with the overall condition of the site given the history of industrial operations.”

Demolition at the site is currently underway and set to continue, with the plywood plant slated to be dismantled throughout the summer and fall.

However, building foundations will remain on the ground until the environmental assessment is completed.

There is currently no update from Tolko or the City of Kelowna when it comes to future plans for the site.
