One of North America’s longest-standing races is set to make a triumphant return to Kelowna this weekend.

The Apple Triathlon will welcome hundreds of athletes from all ages and skill levels to the downtown core to participate in the 36th edition of the event.

It returns after a brief hiatus after last year's event was cancelled due to poor air quality as a result of smoke from surrounding wildfires.

Picking up where it left off in 2017, this year the Apple Tri is more than just a local race as it will host the 2019 Triathlon Canada National Championships and the CAMTRI Continental Cup.

Vying for the title of National Champion is Kelowna athlete Brock Hoel, who has been participating in this very race since he was just nine years old.

Now at 18, Hoel spends 12 months of the year training and is eager to hit the course this weekend and do his city proud.

“I had a really solid winter of training and I never race to get second place, so I am going to do my best to raise that banner this weekend,” said Hoel.

Races start bright and early on Saturday with the “Try-a-Tri” category taking off at 6:30 a.m. in City Park.

Those eager to catch the CAMTRI action should plan to be at The Sails by 10 a.m. on Saturday to see the first women’s heat leave for the qualifying rounds.

The finals will kick off at 10:45 a.m. for the women and 11:45 a.m. for the men on Sunday.

In addition to a weekend filled with elite athletics, spectators and participants can also enjoy the annual Fresh Air Concept/Experience Expo.

Featuring local businesses, athletic vendors and educational booths, the Expo carries on from Friday afternoon to the end of the day Saturday.
