This year marks the 12th annual Culture Days across Canada, a month-long event focused on all things art, heritage, and of course culture in our community.
This year’s theme Re-Imagine signals a positive turning point; in the commitment to building tangible change into the future of arts and culture after a long while of being locked inside due to COVID-19.
From Sept. 24 to Oct. 24, people can experience a wide range of free online and in person activities that offer a fun and safe way to learn and explore at the Kelowna Rotary Centre for the Arts (RCA).
Art and cooking classes, walking tours and live entertainment are just a few of the exciting activities happening over the four weeks.
“We also have some online events,” said Elana Bizovie, Culture Days coordinator for Kelowna. “We are producing a culinary web series that is a sort of cultural cuisine experience.”
“Every Friday in October, people can tune in and we will have a different local chef sharing plates and dishes from their culture. We have Jamaican, Ukrainian, Korean, and Mexican food, and we’ll be sharing the recipes so people can cook along!”
People in Kelowna can also participate in a fun scavenger hunt around downtown that can lead to some sweet prizes.
Everything from gift cards from participating businesses, restaurants offering dinners, tickets to local shows, and spots in classes at the RCA.
For the fourth year the Rotary Centre for the Arts is the community organizer and hub for this year's BC Culture Days, and they’re working alongside Tourism Kelowna and the City of Kelowna to bring together the best the city can offer.
“I think Culture Days is important because it reminds people that they really create the culture of the communities they live in,” said Bizovie.
Sept. 25 will also highlight local artists in the Cultural District from 7pm to 10pm in the 'Roving Audience Experience', where people can explore some of the exciting live performances and also check out the food truck parked outside the RCA.
All events are free, but donations will still be accepted for people/ artists running classes, or organizations setting up activities.
All indoor classes in the Rotary Centre will require proof of vaccination as per the provincial health orders, but outdoor events invite everyone to come and explore the Cultural District in Kelowna.
