(UPDATE: 12:35 p.m.) - First, the City of Kelowna rejected a big development plan for Diamond Mountain, now it has bought the property.

The $11.9 million price gives the city two parcels of land that totals 182 acres near the Glenmore Landfill.

A spokesperson for the city says the purchase was to ensure the ongoing expansion and growth of the Landfill which is expected to operate for 75 years at its current location.

As of now, there are no plans to develop the property.

Kelowna-based Troika Developments had proposed a rezoning that would allow for as many as a thousand homes at the property.

In March, Council rejected the re-zoning over concerns that the Landfill operations would generate complaints in the future in regards to odour, dust and noise.

(Original story: 11:45 a.m.) - The City of Kelowna has purchased the controversial Diamond Mountain lands.

The property was the subject of a massive development proposal that was rejected by the city in March.

Troika Developments had proposed a rezoning that would allow for as many as a thousand homes on property just south of the Glenmore Landfill.

Council rejected the plan over concerns about the proximity to the landfill.

There were worries that approving it would set the city up for future complaints about odour, dust and noise.

The property is currently zoned for 17 ten-acre parcels.

Details on the purchase are still not clear, but Mayor Colin Basran confirmed the purchase this morning.

NowMedia has reached out to the City of Kelowna and will update this story when more information becomes available.
