With the Montana’s Brier being held in Kelowna for the first time since 1968, businesses are taking advantage of the festivities associated with the Canadian men's curling championship, including Sunny’s Modern Diner.

Throughout the past week, chef and manager Robyn Sigurdson, along with the restaurant’s management team, has been creating various forms of eggs Benedict inspired by the teams competing in the Brier.

“We worked with our local purveyors, with Codfathers, with Illichmann's, to come up with a unique menu for each benny, for each province, and then we built a schedule that kind of mimicked Prospera (Place), so province to province would be competing together on those days,” Sigurdson told KelownaNow.

On Friday, it was Manitoba versus Saskatchewan as the Manitoba meal featured sliced brisket, Dijon, sauerkraut and two poached eggs with Hollandaise sauce on English muffins.

The Saskatchewan-themed dish featured pork schnitzel, mushroom ragout, two poached eggs and Hollandaise sauce on English muffins.

“We've been really fortunate to be able to make new friends, as is the way I look at it, because I have people that have come back day after day after day and they tell me how the evening went, how the afternoon draws went and it's just been amazing,” said Sigurdson.

And all those new friends, as Sigurdson said, have brought a boost to the restaurant and the surrounding area during the shoulder season.

“It's been amazing and I think it's been great for the community to have that amount of people in and about,” added Sigurdson.

“It keeps everybody busy. It keeps our downtown sidewalks busy, and you know, that's what Kelowna is – we're all about tourism and welcoming everybody into our home and our community.”

The Brier playoffs continue throughout this weekend and the daily dishes will be determined by the winning teams.
