Daniel Joseph, President of the Kelowna-Lake Country EDA for the People's Party of Canada, has publicly resigned in a video posted to Facebook.
Joseph was elected on November 10th, 2018, however yesterday he announced his departure from the party due to views within the party that he claims are “hateful, racist, homophobic, and xenophobic.”
The video currently has 10,000 views.
“Unfortunately, with newly appointed executives in charge -very vocal officials with utterly hateful views and policy positions- I no longer feel like there is a place for me in this party,” he said in a statement.
“I believe we can do politics differently. I believe in giving a voice to the silent majority, rather than a speakerphone to vocal pockets of dissent and hate,” he said in his Facebook post. “Unfortunately, this party that shouted from the rooftops it was different has proven to me that it isn't different at all.”
He said that when elected, he had not experienced racism or bigotry from the party.
“We had just started out and I felt like I had a real opportunity to influence the tone of the party, even from our one EDA,” he explained.
He added that he hopes that by “publicly disavowing” the party, that they are able to restructure themselves.
“I built up a lot of support in the Kelowna-Lake Country constituency, but can no longer support this party,” he said.
NowMedia has reached out to the Kelowna-Lake Country constituency for comment on the allegations and resignation, but has not yet received a response.
The People's Party of Canada was launched by Maxime Bernier on September 14, 2018, and was officially recognized by Elections Canada on January 18, 2019. Bernier ran for leadership of the Conservative Party in 2016-17.
The party's website states that their platform has yet to be finalized, however, it will be mostly based on the same policies proposed by Bernier in 2016.
