(UPDATE @ 10 p.m.): The RCMP has revealed more details about the stand-off in Rutland on Monday evening.

The 40-year-old Kelowna man they arrested was wanted by police after allegedly stabbing a homeowner in Arab Road who confronted him at about 4:18 p.m. The homeowner was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The arrested man is then accused by Mounties of stealing a car from a woman – who was also taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries – before fleeing.

“Kelowna RCMP front line officers spotted the stolen vehicle and, with public safety in mind, engaged in attempts to stop the vehicle,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.

“The suspect abandoned the stolen vehicle after it collided with a fire hydrant on Bryden Road near Highway 33. Officers chased the suspect on foot, who ran into and barricaded himself inside an empty nearby home.”‎

The scene was attended by the RCMP Southeast District Emergency Response Team (ERT).

Any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police are asked to call the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.

(UPDATE @ 9:45 p.m.)

(UPDATE @ 8:00 p.m.)

Dozens of RCMP officers - including heavily armed tactical units - remain gathered outside a home in Bryden Road for what appears to be a standoff.

There has been a regular flow of police cars to the street since the incident first began at about 4.30 p.m.

At exactly 7.30 p.m., tactical officers in an armoured truck arrived at the scene. Moments later, another arrived.

Cpl. Jesse O'Donaghey told KelownaNow that more information would be released when it is available.

(UPDATE @ 5:50 p.m.): Dozens of police officers have surrounded a house in Bryden Road.

Jarren Tomlinson said there are as many as 30 officers outside the house opposite his own.

A "nice elderly couple" lives in the home, he explained.

Many of the officers at the scene are armed with rifles.

Bryden Road is closed to all traffic.

Tomlinson said the police – who also have a dog on the scene – have so far knocked on the door and "shouted a bunch".

He said it began at 4:30 p.m.

(Original story @ 5 p.m.): Water is rushing down a highway in Kelowna this afternoon after a hydrant appears to have been knocked over.

There is a large police presence at Bryden Road and Hwy 33, where water is spraying into the air.

A police helicopter is also flying overhead.

The Kelowna Fire Department is also on the scene.

Ramanjot Singh, who lives nearby, said “water is coming down like crazy”.

Traffic, though, is largely unaffected, with just one lane of Hwy 33 shut.

This story will be updated when more information becomes available.
