A West Kelowna man has died after a pick-up truck he was driving crashed on Hwy 3.

Trail Mounties said the man, who was 31, was under the influence of drugs and alcohol and might not have been wearing his seatbelt.

The 2008 Mazda pick-up he was driving west along Hwy 3 on Sept. 6 drifted onto the soft shoulder before crossing into the eastbound lane and colliding with a barricade, police said.

It happened at about 5:15 pm, close to Nancy Greene Provincial Park.

A 26-year-old passenger – a woman from West Kelowna – was also hurt in the crash and taken to Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital for treatment.

Her condition is unknown.

"Trail RCMP remind the public about the danger of driving while impaired by drugs and alcohol,” said Detachment Commander Sgt. Mike Wicentowich.

“Every year, an average of 67 people die each year, and hundreds more [are] injured, on BC roadways as a result of impaired driving.

“Please be a part of the solution by driving sober, arranging for a designated driver, or alternative transportation like a taxi or bus.”

The man’s death has been referred to the BC Coroners Service.
