A Kelowna company has been handed a sizeable fine by WorkSafeBC.

According to WorkSafeBC, the penalty imposed on Colonial Countertops Ltd. is due to a “high-risk violation” where a worker sustained serious injuries operating a table saw.

“WorkSafeBC determined that the saw's guard had not been adjusted properly at the time of the incident,” a statement said.

“In addition, no safe work procedures had been in place and there were no records of worker training.”

In addition, the WorkSafeBC investigation found that the company had failed to ensure guards were not removed from the equipment and it was a repeated violation.

“The firm also failed to provide its workers with the information, instruction, training, and supervision necessary to ensure their health and safety,” added the statement.

WorkSafeBC imposed the fine on Nov. 30, 2021, but did not reveal when the incident happened or the extent of the employee’s injuries.
