Youth skiers from the Big White Ski club claimed the Apex mountain for their own when they captured five gold medals and numerous podium finishes for the Nancy Greene South Zone Race on Sunday.

Approximately 71 skiers from Apex, Mt. Baldy and Big White strapped on their boots for the race this weekend.

Due to the road closure between Penticton and Summerland, only 15 members from the Big White Ski Club (BWSC) competed in the race, a significantly less amount than the more than 50 racers from BWSC that were expected to make an appearance –– but that didn’t slow down those who showed up.

The first race of the season proved fruitful for the young racers skiing in the BWSC Blazer program, aging from 5 to 11 years old, as they captured five gold medals and made 11 podium finishes.

The ladies made their presence known, obtaining three of the five gold medals.

In the 2007 class, Tabitha Taylor scoped out first place, with Ashley Kay following close in second place.

In the 2009 class, Layla Styles dominated the slope, taking first place, joined by third place Mikalah Taylor and Lenna Barbaza in sixth.

In the 2012 class, Tatum Styles earned Big White another piece of gold hardware, placing first.

In the 2013 class Adriana Carreon kept up the medal haul and picked up a sweet silver medal.

In the mens division, the Big White Ski club kept up the good work.

In the 2008 class, Keir Pillips stole the show taking first place.

In the 2009 class, the BWSC owned the podium, with Hunter Kay taking first, Ryan Rebagliati in second and joined by Aidan Carreon in third. Oliver Yannow was separated by only one racer in the BWSC stream, placing fifth in the race.

In the 2010 class, Benjamin Barbaza continued the BWSC podium show taking second place. Oliver Pillips raced well, placing sixth.

In the 2012 class, Henry Barbaza sped into second place.

Congratulations to all the racers!
