Here are the results of multiple Kelowna United and Junior Heat soccer teams at recent provincial tournaments:
PROVINCIAL B CUP (girls in Burnaby, BC and boys in Prince George, BC:
KU U13 Girls (Devils) – Gold Medal Winners
The Kelowna United Devils went undefeated in provincial play. Their first game was against Prince George who they defeated with a score of 4-1. Their second game against a very talented North Shore team, the Devils scored 2 goals late in the second half to win 2-0. The third game was against the host club, Burnaby. They played like a team and won 6-0. This put them #1 in their pool and a chance to play for Gold. Their opponents in the final game were a very defensitve Coastal FC. It was tied 1-1 at halftime. The Devils continued to work hard and dominated the second half, finally scoring with 10 minutes left to win Provincial Gold! Excellent effort from everyone!
KU U15 Girls (Lommer) – Gold Medal Winners
Congratulations to Kelowna United GU-15's who Won all 3 pool games, to advance to the Gold medal match at Provincials this past weekend scoring 7 goals in total with only 2 against due to a great defensive effort. The girls showed character by coming from behind in the second pool game to win in the last few minutes.
The final game went to a penalty shoot-out with KU coming out in top. A very exciting win. It was a great team effort through-out the tournament.
KU U16 Girls – Silver Medal Winners
Earning a Silver medal, the Kelowna United U16 Girls won 3-1 against West Coast Auto Group and 2-1 against Juan de Fuca. The girls left it all on the field in a tough final against Quesnel, losing 3-1. Kelowna goal was scored by Olivia Gran. Kelowna United also picked up the U16 fair play award.
KU U17 Boys – Bronze Medal Winners
The U17 Boys lost their first game to the Juventus Academy 2 to 1 with a goal scored by Ethan Kersche. The second game was an 8 to 1 win for KU against Bulkley Valley. Eric Dueck scored five of the goals, Ethan Kersche scored two and Lee Arnesen one. The bronze medal game was 3 to 0 for Kelowna against Terrace Selects. Joshua Clancy scored two of the goals with the final goal put in by Matthew Pryce.
PROVINCIAL A CUP (held in Surrey, BC):
KU/Junior Heat U14 Girls – Silver Medal Winners
The KU/Jr Heat U14 Girls secured Silver during the Provincial A Cup after a dramatic and hard fought loss against West Vancouver. Play went back and forth all game yet neither team could find the back of the net. A penalty kick against Jr Heat with 2 minutes to spare in the second half for a hand-ball in the box (where was VAR when you need it) added tension with World Cup like dramatic flair. Jr Heat keeper Farrah Goulet made an amazing save, keeping Jr Heat in the game. With no scoring after 20 minutes of added time, the game went to penalty kicks. Crowds grew as the teams lined up for their kicks. With it tied 4-4 after 5 penalty shots, West Vancouver finally secured their win in sudden death PKs. Best of all, both teams celebrated together emphasizing fair play and true sportsmanship of the players on both teams. A proud moment for Jr. Heat GU 14, congratulations!
KU/Junior Heat U15 Boys – Silver Medal Winners
The 2004 Junior Heat Boys started off the tournament with a narrow 2-0 loss to the BC Coastal Metro Soccer Champion Fraser Valley Selects. Needing to win their remaining games to get into the Gold Medal game, the 2004 Junior Heat Boys upped their work rate and defeated the Coastal Cup Champions Port Moody 2-0 and the Vancouver Island representatives, Upper Island Riptide 4-0.
The Heat boys faced the Fraser Valley team in the Gold Medal match. The Fraser Valley team had only lost 1 league game their entire season, and they had beaten each of the Provincial Finalists in round robin play. The Heat boys started well and gave a tremendous effort against a very strong opponent. The Heat boys would eventually fall 3-0 to Fraser Valley. Having beaten the Island representatives and the Coastal Cup Champions, the 2004 Junior Heat boys genuinely earned their Silver Medals and cemented their standing in provincial Metro soccer.
KU U18 Boys – Bronze Medal Winners
Kelowna United U18 Boys earned a Bronze medal in the Provincial A Playoff tournament. Thanks to the stellar coaching by Kelly Sherman and Stuart Wright, the boys captured the league championship and earned their way to the BC Provincial A Playoffs. Competition was fierce and their numbers were dwindling due to travel, fatigue and injuries. Port Moody, who won the tournament, proved a formidable opponent.
