On June 17, the Western Hockey League announced its Return to Play Protocol for 2020-21, which included a targeted start date of Oct. 2.
Now, seven weeks later, the league has realised that start in October won’t be feasible and will instead try to begin the regular season on Friday, Dec. 4.

“In our discussions with the government and health authorities, it has become apparent that additional time is required to ensure we can return to play in a safe and responsible manner,” said Ron Robison, WHL commissioner.
“Our WHL health and safety protocols have been well received by the health authorities but we have several key issues that we will need to reach a resolution on in the coming months.”
Despite the late start, the league says it's committed to playing a full regular season of 68 games and a four-round playoffs.
A push back to December gives the WHL time to work with both government and health authorities to resolve important issues regarding a return to play.
