It was one that got away.

Despite outshooting the visiting Victoria Grizzlies 40-23 and controlling the play for most of the game, the host West Kelowna Warriors fell 3-2 in overtime in B.C. Hockey League action on Sunday.

Victoria captain Marty Westhaver scored his second goal of the afternoon 2:05 in to overtime to complete the Grizzlies’ comeback that saw them overcome an early 2-0 deficit in front of 589 fans at Royal LePage Place.

Westhaver had pulled his team even at 6:41 of the third period to force the overtime while linemate Henri Schreifels had opened the scoring for the visitors 11 minutes into the second. He tapped the puck into an empty net while West Kelowna goaltender Brock Baier was on his back during a scrum.

The Warriors, coming off their first win of the season on Friday in Langley, showed jump right from the start and took a well-deserved lead at 17:31 of the first on Levi Stauber’s league-leading fifth goal of the season by stuffing in a rebound off a Brandon Dent shot.

John Evans, a South Surrey product, wristed his second goal in as many games at 4:51 of a second period that saw the Warriors fire 16 shots at winning goaltender Joe Howe.

The Warriors, 1-3-1 on the season, are back in action on Friday when they bus to Merritt to take on the winless Centennials (0-3) while they play host to Trail Smoke Eaters (0-3-1) on Saturday beginning at 6 p.m.
