Local new-wave outfit, Proper Man, are celebrating the Okanagan with the release of their latest music video for “Kleptomaniac.”

The 1920’s themed production sees the group utilizing various historical landmarks throughout the South Okanagan, including the S.S. Sicamous and the Kettle Valley Steam Railway.

“We are proud to be from the Okanagan and to celebrate it,” said frontman, Jason “Norm” Parkes.

According to Parkes, the creative crew behind the video initially wanted to shoot in Vancouver, but following a quick visit to our valley they were “blown away.”

“Once they saw what we actually had, their minds were blown,” added Parkes.

Inspired by popular television series, Peaky Blinders, the video takes viewers on a trip back in time to witness the rough and tough way of a group of criminals thieving their way to riches.

Nostalgia runs rampant in more ways than one throughout the video.

In addition to the theatrics, costumes and locations, the song itself is reminiscent of the sugary pop-punk and new wave anthems of the 80s, an interesting juxtaposition that is common in the band.

After the camera’s shut off, you’ll still catch the gentlemen in Proper Man looking dapper enough to attend one of Gatsby’s galas, all the while playing tunes you’d be likely to hear during the opening credits of a John Hughes movie.

“The vibe of Proper Man and all the songs is total nostalgia, we want to take people back to when they were younger,” said Parkes.

And as for the 1920s get up, that is just something they enjoy.

“We are really into that imagery, which is kind of odd because we are combining that with new wave, so it's different,”

In proper prohibition fashion, Proper Man shows are not necessarily the easiest to track down, giving them a speakeasy feel.

The group will often play pop up shows in interesting venues such as the basement of Hatch Winery, where Parkes also doubles as the winemaker.

Proper Man is currently hard at work on a new album,  but if you’re eager to hear more, you can pick up their limited edition pink vinyl record Fancy That at the Hatch Winery, or head to their youtube channel.
