The Mayor of Enderby has implemented a compost system at a local bakery to help divert waste from landfills and improve soils.

The bin was delivered to Sutherland’s Bakery on Thursday and now staff and customers are able to put food scraps, coffee filters, stir sticks and sugar packets into the bin. Everything that ends up in the bin goes to a farm facility in Salmon Arm called Spa Hills Compost. Spa Hills is scaling up their food waste composting operation to help divert waste from the landfill while creating a chemical-free compost for the 300 acres they farm.

“Compost helps our soil retain moisture, which is very important in such a dry region.”, said Co-Owner Josh Mitchell. “Plus, we’ll be helping restaurants, hotels and other businesses reduce their greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) which is really the way things are going.”

The company currently covers areas in Vernon, Salmon Arm, Enderby, Sicamous, Sorrento, Falkland, Coldstream, Lake Country, and Grindrod. Spa Hills Compost is currently the only professional food waste pickup service in the Okanagan and Shuswap regions.

Organizations that are interested in adding a bin to their business can do so by contacting Keli Westgate at 250-938-0770 or keli@spahillscompost.ca or visit their website www.spahillscompost.ca.
