High school student arrested after threatening social media posts

A serious situation unfolded this morning at Salmon Arm Secondary School in the North Okanagan.

According to a School District 83 spokesperson, a student attending the school was arrested by RCMP after making threatening posts on social media.

“The RCMP and school staff quickly determined the location of the student and the student was detained by RCMP,” said spokesperson Alice Hucul.

“No weapons were found at the time. The incident is being taken very seriously and the school district safety procedures and protocols are being followed.”

RCMP have confirmed they are investigating and arrested a student under the age of 18 this morning.

"In cooperation with School District staff the RCMP were able to locate the individual, who is a student, and take the student into custody without incident this morning as the individual arrived at school," read an RCMP release.

"No weapons were located when the suspect was taken into custody. The individual is under the age of 18."

RCMP have also confirmed that there is no further known threat to student safety in Salmon Arm as a result of this social media threat at this time.
