The North Okanagan Labour Council are hosting the fifth annual Labour Day Picnic at Mission Creek Park on Sunday afternoon.
The event was created as a way for the community to not only enjoy a day off but learn more about the reason behind the statutory holiday, and the advocacy work of local unions.
“A lot of the benefits we have today both as union and not union workers stem from the advocacy put in by union workers over the last century,” said Carole Gordon, a teacher delegate for the North Okanagan Labour Council.
Over ten local unions have joined in on the event, highlighting some of the different work they are doing and new initiatives they are working towards bringing not only to our community but all of Canada.
In addition to offering up some educational information, booths also handed out swag. Kelowna’s local branch of CUPE BC School District 23 support workers handed out school supplies to local families for free.
Though some may think of today as an extra day off, Gordon says it is much more than that.
“It is more than a day off, today is a celebration of all the work that has happened; Union workers have sacrificed a lot, whether that be through strike or personal sacrifice to make gains for every person,”
Attendees can also enjoy a free lunch, live music and an abundance of kid-friendly activities.
The event carries on until 3 p.m., so don’t miss out on a great way to celebrate this important holiday!
