Residents of the Kelowna area flocked to the parking lot of Prospera Place on Saturday morning eager to pull for their community.
Pull what you might ask? A 41,900-pound city bus, all in support of the United Way bus pull!
The annually recurring event is well-known and loved in the community for harvesting a fun and exciting day of teamwork, fitness and philanthropy as the United Way’s only peer to peer fundraiser of the year.
Funds garnered through the event will be invested back into the community through various local organizations and programs with a highlight on those that focus on youth, poverty and community.
Prior to the first pull, the tally for the event was already at an impressive $17,405 — not far off from the $20,000 online goal and it is still growing.
“It is like a 20 birds with one stone type of event because it is not just supporting one charity, it is going to support so many different charities to help them further their missions,” said Sarah Anne Taylor, manager of individual and planned giving for the United Way of the BC Southern Interior.
“It is really helping bring everyone up at the same time and that is what I love about it. It's all about being together, celebrating the accomplishments of Kelowna, raising funds for great programs and helping people who need it in our city.”
According to Taylor, the 2019 event is experiencing a record-breaking turn out with a whopping 14 teams of eight registered compared to 2018’s total of ten teams.
“The participants are what make these events what they are, they bring the energy, the passion and the power that it takes to pull these busses and support this cause,” added Taylor.
On until 2 p.m. this afternoon, the bus pull is open for the public to enjoy. From watching the teams haul their busses across the finish line, to a by donation barbeque, and local vendors to check out — the event has something for everyone.
