(UPDATE: June 6 @ 2:35 pm) - Hwy 97 has partially reopened.

According to DriveBC, the route is open to single-lane alternating traffic between Summerland and Penticton.

It was shut down overnight after a landslide spread debris across the highway at Lakeshore Drive, just south of Summerland.

It's the second landslide in the area that has resulted in a highway closure in less than a month.

(Original story: June 6 @ 6:30 am) - For the second time in less than a month, a landslide has closed Hwy 97 in the South Okanagan.

The road was shut down between Summerland and Penticton around 1 am.

Traffic control is at the scene and an assessment is in progress, but there’s no estimate as to when the highway might reopen.

DriveBC lists the detour around the slide as Hwy 97C and Hwy 3A, which is a lengthy work around.

It’s unknown at this time if passenger vehicles are able to take a shorter detour through Summerland.

The overnight slide comes three weeks after a landslide closed the highway at Lakeshore Drive.

NowMedia will update this story as more information becomes available.
