(UPDATE: Nov. 20 @ 3:25 p.m.) - A suspect has been arrested in relation to last week's break and enter, which ended in a stolen car being torched.
"Numerous police officers were tasked with investigating this particular incident and through that, a suspect was identified as a known prolific offender in the Vernon area," said Cst. Kelly Brett.
"This particular incident is a good example of the North Okanagan RCMP’s commitment to reducing crime through prolific and priority offender management."
Shortly before 1 p.m. on Nov. 17, the day after the original incident, the suspect was seen operating a motor vehicle through a drive-thru in the Okanagan Landing area of Vernon.
RCMP attempted to arrest the man, but he drove over two curbs and into a neighbouring parking lot at a high rate of speed to evade police.
A short time later, he was seen a second time in the 4100 block of 24th Avenue, where he attempted to flee from police on foot.
Officers pursued the suspect over fences and through a creek where he was ultimately apprehended and brought into custody.
Sheldon Veness, a 25-year-old Vernon man, has been charged with break and enter, theft of a motor vehicle, arson, dangerous driving, flight from police and three counts of breach of probation.
He was held in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
(Original story: Nov. 16 @ noon) - An overnight break and enter in Vernon took quite the turn as police pursued the suspect this morning.
RCMP were initially called to the residence in the 6900 block of Marshall Road around 3 a.m. when a homeowner was awoken by the sound of his garage door opening.
He told officers that someone had entered their home while they were sleeping, stole a basket that contained an iPad and two iPhones, as well as a purse and wallet with identification and credit cards.
The thief also stole keys to the home owners vehicle, a grey Dodge Journey, accessed the garage and took off in the stolen set of wheels.
It didn’t take long for the RCMP to locate the stolen Dodge Journey leaving a local convenience store, which led to an attempted road stop.
However, the suspect had other ideas and fled at a high rate of speed.
The vehicle was later located fully engulfed in flames at Okanagan Landing School and the blaze was extinguished by the Okanagan Landing Fire Department.
The investigation is ongoing and will be assisted by the RCMP Forensic Identification Unit.
