We’re officially into fall, which means open burning season is upon us.

Open burning permits will be available for eligible Central Okanagan property owners starting Friday.

Anyone meeting the requirements of local fire protection bylaws will be eligible to receive a permit, which they can pick up from their local fire service.

You can also call the Regional District of Central Okanagan at 250-469-6223 to obtain a permit.

The RDCO asks anyone who is eligible to first consider alternatives like chipping, grinding or, if applicable, yard waste disposal at a local landfill.

Anyone who is doing an open burn will need to meet all open burning smoke control regulations and ensure that open burning is allowed on a particular day.

You can do that by calling the Outdoor Burning Hotline at 1-855-262-2876 or checking the RDCO website.

Open burning will be allowed until April 30, although the date could be adjusted depending on the local fire hazard.
