If you see smoke coming from the Joe Rich area this fall, it’s likely under control.

Starting on Monday, Sept. 30, the BC Wildfire Service will be doing periodic controlled burns on about 10 piles in Joe Rich, west of Philpott Road.

They’re expected to conclude by the end of December.

There’s no set timing for the burns and they’ll only occur when weather, site conditions and venting is right.

“Staff from the BC Wildfire Service will carefully prepare, control and monitor the fire at all times,” says a statement from the Government of BC.

“Smoke may be visible from nearby communities, but ignition will proceed only if conditions are suitable and will allow for quick smoke dissipation.”

The burns are part of the rehabilitation process in the wake of the Philpott Road wildfire, which burned 465 hectares of land in August 2017.

It will reduce the threat of erosion, re-establish vegetation and reduce future wildfire risk, all of which reduce the threat of unwanted wildfires.
