Police in Penticton are investigating after a pickup truck reportedly went off-road before striking and seriously hurting a cyclist in a hit and run.

Mounties were called at about 4:25 am on Saturday morning after residents heard screams coming from the 200 block of Elm Avenue.

When officers headed to the beach, they found a man with serious injuries to his lower body.

They were then told that the injured man had been cycling in the area when a red Dodge pickup veered off the road and onto the grass before hitting him.

The truck is then believed to have fled towards South Main Street.

The cyclist was taken to hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

“As a result of the continued investigation, police have since recovered a vehicle they believe to be involved in the hit and run, which is being considered an isolated event at this time,” said Cpl Jesse O’Donaghey.

“A collision analyst and reconstructionist examined the scene, while forensic specialists are expected to examine the suspect vehicle, as police continue to probe the circumstances surrounding this incident.”

If you witnessed the crash, call the Penticton RCMP at 250-492-4300.
