Friends, family and others are rallying behind a young woman from Armstrong whose life has been turned upside down by a recent cancer diagnosis.
Karlina Muik is just 21-years-old, but has been diagnosed with stage four alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, which is a rare form of soft tissue cancer.
She now faces nine months of treatment with five types of chemotherapy, radiation and possible surgery, which begins in two weeks.
It will be an aggressive treatment, explained Meghan Johnston, due to the aggressive nature of the cancer.
Johnston is the aunt of Muik’s high school sweetheart and fiancé Ty, and has started a GoFundMe with a goal of making Muik’s journey “as smooth as possible.”
She wants to raise money so the 21-year-old can enjoy everyday life experiences while battling the disease and focus on getting better, rather than her expenses.
Johnston said that the young couple will be travelling lots over the coming months as Muik will be receiving treatment in Kelowna and Vancouver, which is another added cost.
However, one of the most important uses for the money will be to give her a chance to one day have a child.
“Ty and Karlina are concerned, due to the chemo she may not be able to have children down the road so they want to be prepared,” Johnston explained.
“The fertility clinic has given an estimate and it’s not cheap. I hope that if the procedure can be done, with money not being a stress it will give her something to be excited and hopeful for.”
Johnston added that Muik is one of the most caring and hardworking people she knows and is more than deserving of a little help in this tumultuous time.
