Man, 55, faces arson charges after several dumpster fires lit in Okanagan town

A man has been arrested after several dumpsters were set on fire in Summerland.

Firefighters were called at 2:30 am on Thursday about the fires, which had all reportedly been set within a short period of time. 

A dumpster was set on fire along Wharton St, while two garbage cans were lit ablaze in the skate park, police said.

Another garbage can, near the public pool, was also found on fire, according to Mounties.

Police said they were all lit “within minutes of one another.”

When officers headed to the scene, they were told by witnesses about a man walking away from one of the fires carrying a gas can.

“Soon thereafter, front-line officers located a 55-year-old man, walking along Prairie Valley Road, where he was subsequently arrested,” police explained. 

“Officers are continuing their investigation, with the man facing a number of charges related to arson.”
