(UPDATE: Aug. 9 @ 10:29 am): Police have confirmed the drowning occurred just after 2 pm on Monday.
They said the victim – a 57-year-old man from the Lower Mainland – was with his family and friends when he jumped into the water.
He failed to resurface and, according to the RCMP, around 30 minutes elapsed before his disappearance was noticed.
His body was later found by the lifeguard, who immediately began lifesaving measures.
Paramedics arrived and took those efforts over, but they were unsuccessful and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said no criminality is suspected and that the investigation into the man's death is being carried out by the BC Coroners Service.
(Original story: Aug. 9 @ 10:10 am): A person has drowned in the lake off Peachland, according to the district’s mayor.
Cindy Fortin said she is “incredibly sad” about the news.
It happened on Monday afternoon in Swim Bay, which is at Beach Avenue.
“Our deep and heartfelt condolences are with the family,” the mayor said.
“Please let's not speculate on how it happened, and let the experts do their job.”
