A poor, innocent dog lost its life in the North Okanagan earlier this week after its owner didn’t use the proper due diligence while transporting their pet.

Britt Mills, a veterinarian who runs Mills Vet in Armstrong, took to Facebook to share the story that her young son was unfortunate enough to witness.

“My 17-year-old son witnessed a dog dragged to its death yesterday because it was loosely tied in the back of a pickup truck and jumped out,” her post began.

Mills explained that her son tried to get the driver’s attention, but they didn’t hear the honking and only came to a stop when another vehicle pulled in front of them.

“It wasn’t a long distance but there wasn’t much recognizable of a beautiful dog,” she wrote. “The driver was devastated and everyone at the scene was traumatized.”

Mills wrote the post in hopes of providing further education to the fact that it’s illegal to transport your pet that way and there’s only one way to properly put a dog in the back of a moving pickup.

“If a dog has to be in the back of a truck, the correct way of securing him is two short ties coming from either side of the box,” she explained. “This requires getting in the box with the dog as you secure him.”

Despite the obviously dangerous nature of having a dog tied in the back of a truck like this person did, Mills said that she’s often been met with anger when trying to convey this message.

“I have approached people in parking lots with dogs that were incorrectly tied to explain the dangers and gotten a swearing tirade in response,” explained Mills, who hopes this tragedy can be a wake up call.

“If you see a dog incorrectly secured, call the police or the SPCA immediately.”

Section 72 of the BC Motor Vehicle Act prohibits the transport of an unsecured pet in the back of a pickup truck.
