Residents of Peachland could be getting a new community garden next to the community’s visitor centre.

Municipal council will hear from the Peachland Wellness Center (PWC) and the community services department during the Tuesday evening meeting.

The community garden would be located on the south side of the Peachland Visitor Centre, which is located off 6th Street, near Cousins Park.

The PWC has been operating a community garden from their downtown location, but in anticipation of the second phase of the Seniors Support Society’s affordable housing project, the garden has been vacant since the fall.

A report headed to council says the garden plots were “fully subscribed” and that demand remains high among the community.

The PWC says they have successfully received a grant from United Way to construct and operate a new garden somewhere in the community, says the report.

The area on the south side of the visitor centre is currently an used grassy area

“The new intergenerational community garden vision being proposed is a specially designed open concept garden that includes the use of sustainable low-impact gardening practices (e.g., rainwater reuse), designed for beautification and public gathering with no perimeter fencing,” the report explains.

“The garden would be available to locals of all age groups and managed by the PWC.”

In addition to providing a food source and gathering space for the community, discussions are also underway with the Boys and Girls Club to promote learning opportunities for youth.

This site was chosen because it is under-utilized, has a readily available water source, is accessible for all community members, centrally located, close to public washrooms, nearby the community centre and will add “vitality” to Beach Avenue, states the report.

Peachland council will discuss the matter further during the Tuesday meeting, which begins at 6 pm.
