An estimated 5% of B.C. kids don’t use a child car seat, which equates to roughly 23,000 kids.
The United Way is hoping to put a dent in that number by providing car seats to Okanagan families in need.
“Every day, families living right here in the Okanagan are forced to make extremely difficult choices,” says Helen Jackman, executive director of United Way Centeral & South Okanagan Similkameen.
“The choice between paying rent or putting food on the table and making sure their kids travel safely. I’m really proud that this partnership initiative will enable families to keep their children safe.”
The annual initiative will include 13 communities from Salmon Arm to the Canada/U.S. border and even over to Princeton.
Altogether, 16 community partners will distribute 114 car seats to families in need.
Those community partners include Central Okanagan Foundation, KGH Foundation, VJH Foundation and Kal Tire.
The deliveries will happen on Wednesday, Aug. 29 at four different locations across the Okanagan.
- North Okanagan – Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs, 3300 37th Avenue, Vernon – 10 a.m.
- South Okanagan – OneSky Community Resources, 330 Ellis St. Penticton - 11:40
- Central Okanagan – Central Okanagan Family Hub, Pearson Road Elementary 700 Pearson Rd., Kelowna – 1:20 p.m.
- Central Okanagan – Westbank First Nation Community Services, 1900 Quail Lane, West Kelowna – 1:40 p.m.
