There was a terrifying near miss this morning as thousands of cyclists descended on the Okanagan.

In footage captured by a driver’s dashcam, several participants in the 2019 Granfondo Axel Merckx Okanagan race can be seen falling over – and into the road.

But fortunately, driver Shaun Siebert kept his cool and avoided a tragedy by slowing down and dodging the falling riders.

“I'm so glad I was able to avoid them,” he explained.

“Feeling pretty lucky for them and I.”

The fall happened at 7.46 am, just north of Penticton.

As part of the race, the competitors go south past Oliver and north to Summerland.

It finishes today at 4 pm, outside Gyro Park in Penticton.

Siebert reminded drivers to be careful while the race is ongoing.

“These folks are really unpredictable,” he said.
