A local drag queen is breaking stereotypes about her profession.

Alexa Nerezza, or Matt Ruck when out of drag, is Kelowna’s only heterosexual (straight) and performing queen.

For the last two years, Ruck has been working in Kelowna’s drag scene as Nerezza — a beautiful queen with an alternative punk rock edge. However, Ruck’s desire to express himself through the art of drag goes back to his youth.

Nerezza has had quite a busy career in the short while she has been working.

She works alongside various local queens in addition to co-hosting the all-ages Studs n’ Stilettos shows with Jenna Telz, she has had the opportunity to perform alongside RuPaul Drag Race star Tatianna and will soon share the stage with Canadian queen and trailblazer, Brooke Lynn Hytes.

She also travels up and down the valley for shows including stops in Kamloops and Revelstoke and will soon be a contestant in Kelowna’s Next Drag Superstar competition.

We caught up with Nerezza to learn more about how she got started, stigma, the local scene and more.
