Penticton Man Charged After Killing Pregnant Deer

A Penticton man has been charged after allegedly shooting a pregnant deer.

An investigation by the Conservation Officer Service (COS) started in April, 2015, as a result of a complaint. The complaint, which was received through a poacher hotline alleged that two males had shot and killed a pregnant mule deer doe on April 16.

Jason Thurston, 27, was the man responsible for the shooting and killing of the animal.

“Additionally, Thurston was prohibited from firearms at the time which included crossbows. Thurston also later admitted to Conservation Officers that he had consumed approximately 10 beers and shot at two other mule deer that morning,” said a post by the Conservation Officer Service.

The Penticton man was found guilty of hunting during prohibited hours, killing wildlife not within open season and having firearms/crossbows while prohibited.

Thurston was fined $575 with an order to pay $4,500 to HCTF. He also have a lifetime ban on firearms, a five-year hunting license suspension and was sentenced to a 60-day intermittent jail sentence starting on April 1.

The other man involved will appear in Penticton Provincial Court on May 13.
