Cirque du Soleil is heading to Penticton in the new year.

From Jan. 4 to 7, there will be eight performances of Corteo at the South Okanagan Events Centre (SOEC).

Corteo, which means cortege in Italian, combines acrobatic feats, comedy and acting for a show that plunges spectators into a theatrical world of fun and spontaneity situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth.

In a carnival atmosphere, a clown pictures his own funeral taking place, and by juxtaposing the large with the small and the ridiculous with the tragic, the show highlights the strength and fragility of the clown to illustrate the humanity within everyone.

The music, sometimes lyrical and sometimes playful, carries Corteo through a timeless celebration in which illusion teases reality.

Giving a unique perspective to the spectators and the performers, the stage is central in the arena and divides the venue in two, with each half of the audience facing the other.

The set curtains, inspired by the Eiffel Tower, and the central curtains, which were hand painted, give a grandiose feel to the stage.

Directed by Daniele Finzi Pasca and presented by Sun Life, this one-of-a-kind show has been performed to over 10 million people throughout 20 countries since April 2005.

The performance schedule includes:

Tickets for the Penticton shows are now available online, exclusively to Club Cirque members.

General tickets go on sale on Monday, June 5 at 10 am.
