UPDATE: Penticton carjacking suspect arrested

(UPDATE: Sept. 25 @ 9 am) - The man wanted for an armed carjacking in Penticton has been arrested.

Cst. James Grandy of the Penticton RCMP says he was arrested on Tuesday night and will now stay in custody as he awaits his bail hearing today.

Around 3 pm on Sept. 19, the man allegedly stole a 2017 Toyota Rav4 at gunpoint on East Side Road in Penticton.

The car was recovered a day later near the Penticton Golf Club, but the suspect who remained on the run until Tuesday night.

Grandy said more information regarding the suspect and the arrest "will be released later."

(UPDATE: Sept. 23 @ 9:15 am) - A vehicle that was stolen at gunpoint in Penticton last week was recovered less than 24 hours later.

According to the Penticton RCMP, it was located near Eckhardt Avenue West and Comox Street.

The suspect in Thursday's carjacking, however, is still on the loose and the RCMP continue to actively investigate.

The suspect is described as a Caucasian male, 20-30 years of age, around 5'7'' tall, dark brown curly hair, black leather jacket and black jeans.

(Original story: Sept. 19 @ 4:55 pm) - Officers responded to car-jacking incident in Penticton this afternoon, and the suspect is still at large. 

At 3 pm., a driver was flagged down by a man standing by a motorcycle on East Side Road.

Police said that the driver pulled over to assist the man, at which time the man pointed a firearm at the driver. The driver was told to exit their vehicle, and they did. The suspect then drove north on East Side Road toward Penticton.

The victim was unharmed, and called 911 once the suspect left the area. 

Officers immediately began conducting extensive patrols in the Penticton, Okanagan Falls and Summerland areas. The stolen vehicle is a light grey 2017 Toyota Rav 4, British Columbia licence plate JA790V.

The suspect is described as a Caucasian male, 20-30 years of age, approximately 5'7'' tall, dark brown curly hair, black leather jacket and black jeans.

Numerous RCMP Officers, with assistance from the RCMP helicopter and Police Dog Services are continuing to conduct patrols and investigate.

Should anyone observe this vehicle, they are encouraged to call 911 immediately and not engage with the suspect.
