Penticton 'Love Local' spotlights small businesses for community support

Small businesses have taken a huge hit because of COVID-19, but the City of Penticton's "Love Local" initiative is hoping to soften the blow by mustering community support for local businesses and groups affected by the pandemic.

Launched by Penticton's Economic Development department, "Love Local" hopes to raise awareness about how local businesses and groups are navigating the difficult situation, while encouraging residents to stimulate the local economy.

They plan to use social media to showcase the stories of local businesses, as well as social, arts and culture groups, to bring attention to some of the interactions behind the scenes.

“In the coming weeks, we will have more opportunities to show our support as businesses find new and innovative ways to safely reopen,” said Economic Development Specialist Andrew Kemp. "We want to showcase these stories and encourage people to think local first."

So far, Love Local has highlighted the Salvation Army in the city, and the creative expressions of art from the Penticton & District Community Arts Council.

They're also suggesting Penticton residents take initiative to buy locally, including gift cards or takeout; leave online reviews; follow social media accounts for groups or businesses; and spread the word.
