Mardi Gras usually falls on a Tuesday in February, but Pentictonites are celebrating a little early this year.

A Mardi Gras inspired street party will be held in the community to say farewell to summer, according to the Downtown Penticton Association.

“Martin Street’s 200 block is the perfect venue to have a big ‘farewell to summer’ street party,” said Lynn Allin, executive director, Downtown Penticton Association.

“When we proposed hosting a party on Martin Street, the fabulous food and beverage establishments that are part of Penticton’s evolving downtown entertainment district said they’d love to have a decadent Mardi Gras style event. It sounds like wonderful fun so it’s full steam ahead!”

Set for August 30th from 5p.m. to 8 p.m., Mardi Gras on Martin Street is being oriented slightly more toward adults than children.

“Of course families are welcome to come and enjoy the free live music and food, but there won’t be bouncy castles and traditional kid-friendly activities,” said Allin.

“There will be a beverage garden featuring  Slackwater Brewing and staffed by JCI Penticton, plus other tastings from Martin Street businesses will be available up and down the street.  We’re also delighted to have a face painter coming to paint masquerade masks on guests.”

They’ve also ordered 100 fancy tie-on masks that are available for advance sale at their downtown office for $5.

Local band Jack and Jill will play for the evening, covering some classic rock tunes.

“Every time Jack and Jill performs at an event the audience loves them – can’t get enough. They are truly one of Penticton’s favourite bands. they always get folks dancing and singing in the street,” said Allin.

The list of activities is still being finalized but so fay, there will be inflatable jousting for older teens and adults, henna and glitter tattoos, a selfie photo booth, a stilt-walking juggler, and variety of games.

“We think this will be a unique and fun way to end the DPA’s summer event season. We are looking forward to seeing everyone in masks and beads and having a terrific time dancing in the street,” said Allin.

The 200 block of Martin Street will be closed to motorized traffic on August 30th from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. for the event. Towing of vehicles will be in effect so please be sure to move parked vehicles prior to the road closure.
