(UPDATE: Dec. 6 @ 12:20 pm): Investigators looking into potential police misconduct are asking for witnesses to an arrest in Penticton to come forward.
A man sustained a head injury while resisting arrest after being accused of theft in the city on Nov. 8, police said.
He died six days later.
Now the Independent Investigations Office of BC is asking the following witnesses – who were nearby between 8:30 and 8:45 on Nov. 8 – to come forward:
- The driver and or occupants of a tan or grey coloured Honda Odyssey with a hood deflector stopped at the junction of Government Street and Forestbrook Drive for police before continuing
- The driver and or occupants of a purple or grey Honda CRV that turned right onto Forestbrook Drive
The IIO is asking for these witnesses and any others who may have seen, heard, or recorded the incident to contact the IIO Witness Line at 1-855-446-8477.
(Original story: Nov. 19 @ 5: 35 am): Mounties are being investigated after a man who sustained a head injury during an arrest in Penticton died less than a week later.
The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIOBC) said the arrest occurred at about 8:40 in the morning on Nov. 8.
A man had allegedly been involved in a theft at a Penticton store.
Mounties said the man resisted arrest and sustained a “minor head injury” during the struggle.
He was taken to hospital, discharged and then later returned under police supervision.
“The male was admitted to hospital where his condition deteriorated and subsequently, he died six days later on Nov. 14, 2019,” the IIO explained.
His death is also being investigated by the BC Coroners Service.
