Person dies in police custody in Prince George

The Independent Investigations Office of BC is investigating a death that happened at the Prince George RCMP detachment over the weekend.

On Friday night, police arrested one person shortly before 9:30pm for “causing a disturbance.”

They brought that individual into custody, but noticed they were in distress around 4:25am.

Paramedics arrived quickly and rushed the person to the hospital, but the RCMP were informed by hospital staff at 6:46am that the person had died.

The RCMP didn’t release any details on the victim or circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.

The IIO’s investigation into the police-related incident began on Sunday.
