15-Year-Old Girl Found After Going Missing in the Woods

A 15 year old girl who went missing while on a school trip on Vancouver Island has been safely located after a large scale hunt was launched.

The Tofino/ Ahousaht RCMP located 15 year old Leanne John after she became separated from a group she was hiking with in Bedwell Inlet in Tofino. John went missing around 3:30 p.m. on March 3rd and police began the widespread search around 8:00 p.m. that evening.

“We’re very pleased to say that she’s been located and preliminary information is that she is in pretty good condition, all things considered", said detachment commander Sergeant Blaine Mumford. “Considering that she was not dressed for, or prepared for an overnight stay in woods, this is just fantastic news for all those who were searching for her, or who were deeply concerned about her welfare.”

Approximately 40 trained searchers, and 40 volunteers from Ahousaht, under direction of SAR, were actively searching for the missing girl. At first light the RCMP Air Services helicopter joined the search as the coordinated efforts also include the RCMP’s West Coast Marine Section, and RCMP Police Dog Services.
