A Delta police officer has been charged for careless use of a firearm after injuring an individual nearly two years ago.
On November 7th, 2013, a Delta officer was involved in a high risk vehicle check in the area of 108th Avenue and 148th Street in Surrey. During this contact, the Delta officer discharged his firearm into the vehicle striking an individual.
The individual was transported to hospital where he was treated for his injuries. He was later released from hospital.
The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. was notified of the incident and an investigation quickly ensued.
On April 15th, 2015, a Crown Counsel charged the officer with one count of careless use of a firearm.
The officer is currently on non-operational leave.
“Policing is an inherently difficult and, at times, dangerous job; at the Delta Police Department we conduct ongoing reality based training with experts in the field and our training and equipment is second to none. We will continue to train and support our officers as they go about their daily duties,” said Acting Chief Lyle Beaudoin.
