A man is dead following a two vehicle collision on Highway 1 east of Field, B.C.

Golden-Field RCMP responded to the crash at about 7:15 p.m. on Friday, April 24th at a site about three kilometres east of Field. Currently, RCMP believe that the vehicle going east failed to negotiate a curve, therefore hitting an oncoming vehicle.

The oncoming vehicle held two men from Calgary. Though the driver, a 32-year-old from Calgary, was treated by paramedics and released, the 37-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the eastbound vehicle that didn’t negotiate the curve was a 33-year-old man who is believed to be from the Salmon Arm area. This man suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Calgary by STARS Air Ambulance. He is expected to survive.

“We are continuing to investigate, but believe that speed and alcohol likely contributed to the collision.” Said Golden-Field RCMP spokesperson Cst. Spencer Lainchbury. “We will likely be forwarding charges for Impaired Driving causing Death against the driver of the eastbound vehicle.”

The Trans-Canada was closed for several hours in both directions at Golden and Lake Louise as police completed their investigation. The highway opened early Saturday morning.

Police ask that anyone who witnessed the crash and has not spoken to police to contact Cst. Trevor Skappak of RCMP East Kootenay Traffic Services Unit at 250-344-2221.
